Slaves didn't necessarily end up being slaves for their whole lives, they had ways of earning their freedom. Here are some ways.

- It was quite common for some masters to state in their will that their slaves should be set free upon their death.

- Slaves could earn respect and freedom by being Greek scholars and tutoring their masters children.

- Some slaves were bought and trained to become gladiators. This offered better conditions during the training and, if you won a certain amount of contests, you could be set free. But most died before they could enjoy the benefits.
