3. Red Algae

Red algae appear red because they contain the pigment known as phycoerythrin, which reflects red light and absorbs blue light. Nearly all red algae are marine, but some do live in freshwater.

The darkened circular spots on this photomicrograph are the plant cells of the red pond water algae.
