Victory of Samothrace
-headless
-completely marble
-actual lines
-very defined and elegant
-sculpted so the robes are flowing in the wind
-very complex, organic shapes
-smooth and rough textures
-wings spanning out
-strong, defiant carvings
-sculpted with diagonal edge lines so that the figure looks like she is walking with her robes billowing behind her
-her stance defines the sculpture
-great emphasis on the forward thrust of the bodice
-wings spanning out behind her add defiance and emotion
-the moving robes really hold the piece together and add character
I think the sculptor was trying to convey the sense of glory and pride of Greece through her forward thrust and raised wings. She looks so confident and powerful, displaying all the traits the Greeks believe. Although the head is missing, her passion shines through, and she exudes a defiant sense of superiority.
Sculptor of Rhodes
