Artist- Praxiteles
Title- Venus de Mino
Date- 130-100 BC
Medium- stone statue
Provenance- The Louvre Museum in Paris
Description: I see a woman that appears to be a goddess or important figure. She has no arms, because the piece was badly damaged or the were lost. She is wearing her hair back and has a skirt made of robes from that time in Greek history. The woman is shaped like an hourglass.
Analysis:
-The woman was made in a human form and keeps an hour glass shape. She is tall and has a thick shape to represent beauty and grace. She is the goddess of love so she embodies sexually and femininity.
-This statue appears to be rough and made of a thick stone available at that time.
-The smooth upper body of Aphrodite complements the bunched up cloth she is wearing around her waist. There is no color contrast because it is all one piece of gray stone.
Interpretation: The curves appear very appealing to my eyes and have smooth quality. This piece is meant to represent the Greek art and legends of Aphrodite. It gives off a feeling a feminine power and grace. She has curves on her body and represents the ideal way in what a woman's shape would have been.
Judgment: I personally though this piece was very bare, yet spoke volumes. It was simple and gracefully formed. I wanted to learn more about it as soon as I saw it. It is visually simple, but you have to think of the time it was made in. The goddess Aphrodite is beautifully represented in this stone statue.
