Creation of Adam

Artist: Michelangelo

Title: Creation of David "Sistine Chapel

Date: 1508-1512

Medium: Oil Painting

Provenance: Church located in the Vatican City

Source: Rome.info

Description: I see bright colors of blues, oranges, reds, and greens. Their bodies are a pale tan color that many artists of that time used. The painting shows a man reaching to touch God's finger or hand. The man sits on the edge of a hill. Both of their arms are extended and show corded muscles reaching out. God is surrounded by angels on his cloth and he has clothing on. David is alone on the cloud and is not wearing any clothes.

Judgement: I believed this painting is gorgeous and the vibrant color make it different from anything in that time. The way the fingers were placed in the painting add suspense and eagerness as to whether or not they will touch. I feel drawn towards the figures and how the balance of the piece shows such different sides of humanity in God. The "angels" crowded around God add an aspect of wonder because the viewer sees people gathering around the large vocal point that is God.

Interpretation:This piece of artwork is meant to symbol how close and how far we are to God. David is even sitting on a mountain which symbolizes being earthbound an staying there. God is floating with many admire, seen in the air. The focal point of the hands bring the subject of the piece to life. The colors of the blue hues represent calm and peace which are qualities of God.

Analysis:
-The hues stay consistent and the background of light blue is common. Green is one of the most common colors, along with beige and white. The clouds give a lighter feel and represent the clouds up in heaven.
-The negative space includes all the clouds and the sky that the two figures are not laying on. The positive space are God and David.
-the light an darkness play a huge part in presenting the right idea or interpretation. The painter disguised God as part of a brain with valves and pumps outlined. The light can show a different side and it changes the intent of the artist.
-The texture looks to be very coarse and rough to the touch. It does not look smooth because it was not painted on paint paper.
-The fingers almost touching draws the readers eyes for that point outward.
