After Austria's victory, Cavour centered his attention towards gaining power. By 1852 he became prime minister and had the power to make substantial decisions for his country. Under his rule Piedmont entered the Crimean war, and Cavour allied himself with Napoleon III. He saw it as necessary in order to defeat Austria. By 1859 a second war for Italy's independence had begun, but this time with the help of France. Cavour then resigned from his position when he refused to give Venetia to Austrian rule. Other than this Italy had finally been unified. Cavour would return to power in 1860 to sign Savoy and Nice to France, proclaim Rome the capital of Italy, and see Victor Emmanuel II become the first king. Cavour died the following year on June sixth.
