The book begins with a thorough overview of the Clutter family. They seem to be your classic American family. Like all families they have their problems, Mrs. Clutter with her depression and Kenyon has no friends. Mr. Clutter is a strict non-alcoholic and implies that with all his employees. The Chapter comes to a close after the murders.
