Chapter 2

Some of Herbert's friends came after the police left and cleaned the house. The murderers flee to Mexico. Dick is able to pay for the trip with his "hang paper", where he would write bad checks and buy things to sell with the money. Back at the town the first suspect is Bobby, Nancy's boyfriend. He is quickly ruled out. The author then begins to talk about Perry's dark past. His mom leaves his father taking the kids who then end up living in different foster homes. Perry is abused by some of the homes. He then reunited with his father and they started a soon to fail business. It ended when he killed his father. After hearing of perry's childhood, we are introduced to Albert Dewey, the lead investigator. He becomes haunted by the case and feels he needs to solve it. the chapter comes to a close, as Dick and Perry plan to steal a car and murder the driver.
