A shutdown in civil aviation went into effect on the morning of September 11th. Takeoffs were forbidden, and all aircraft in the air were ordered to land, in most cases at airports that were not their destinations. Starting September 13th certain charter jets were quietly allowed to fly, picking up members of the bin Laden family and spiriting them out of the country.
more than 1,500 firemen, search and rescue teams, ironworkers, engineers, heavy equipment operators and other workers at ground zero were doing the physical work of cleaning up the World Trade Center wreckage.
clean-up effort was going slow and taking a long time. the crew had to proceed carefully, and they had to move a lot of debris, truckload by truckload, to a Staten Island landfill. When the clean-up was finished, in May 2002, the workers had moved 108,000 truckloads of debris -- around 1.8 million tons of material. The crew had finished way before schedule and under budget.
