-heydrich continued to intensify his work on spying and arresting people. On 27 September 1941, he was appointed Deputy Reich Protector of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. His responsibilities were to enforce policy, fight resistance to the Nazi regime, and keep up production quotas of Czech motors and arms that were "extremely important to the German war effort". he arrested between 4,000 and 5,000 people in about one year.
Those who were not executed were sent to Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, where only four percent of Czech prisoners survived the war. For his brutal policies during this time he earned the nickname "the butcher of prague."
