Concept 5: adding decimals

Shopping

bills

What is a decimal? How do you add decimals?

A decimal is a number based on tens, tenth parts, and powers of ten. To add a decimal, you must add up the decimal points and then add and bring the decimal point down.

Brandon just went shopping. The receipt machine wasn’t working, so he had to add up his groceries.

He bought 3 gallons of milk for $5.33. He also bought a carton of eggs for $2.50. He added this up and he ended up spending $7.83.
