Herds During the Civil War - The cattle industry dropped in Texas during the Civil War because all the ranchers were fighting in the war. Lots of cattle roamed the state without anyone to control them, which led to a mass increase in cattle population. There were so many cattle by the end of the war and so few Texans with money to buy them that they were worth very little. The ranchers would eventually find that railroads would make them rich.
