In 1914, ships were the only way to transport goods and people across the seas. Sailing ships were readily being replaced by the faster steam ships. In 1900, the 140 day trip from England to Australia was reduced by travelling on steam ships to only 30 days. Many people worked at the docks, loading ships, transporting goods, and maintaining the ships. Air travel was not yet an option, but the Wright Brothers had flown 50 metres, and air travel was starting to become a possibility.
