In 1914, carriages were used widely in middle and upperclass for transport. Trains and trams were used in the cities, but were not available as transport in the country. The carriages were often carried by horses, and sometimes bullocks. While the railroads were still being built, and motor cars were only for the upperclass, carriages remained one of the most used types of transport.
