Not only did the U.S and USSR compete due to their differing ideologies and economic systems, they also increased tension by establishing a geopolitical rivalry that affected the entire world. Divided by the iron curtain, the U.S spread its biggest influence in Western Europe and the Americas while the USSR spread its biggest influence in Eastern Europe. One country this rivalry was clearly seen was Germany.
