A rose is a woody perennial of the called Rosa scientifically, in the Rosaceae family. There are over 100 species in the family. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs with stems that can be armed with pointy thorns. The flowers can be a wide variety in size and shape with colors usually being yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. The species is popular for its beauty. Different species hybridize easily, and this characteristic has been utilized in the development and growth of garden roses.
The leaves are grow alternately off of the stem. Throughout most species they are 5 to 15 cm long. The leaflets often have a serrated texture and often a few small prickles on the bottom of the stem. Many roses are deciduous but a few, mainly from South east Asia, are evergreen.
