Sassafras albidum is a species of native to Northeastern America. It is prominent throughout the eastern deciduous forest habitat type, at higher altitudes. It previously occurred in southern Wisconsin.
The leaves are green and yellow in color, 10–16 cm long and 5–10 cm broad with a short, slender, and grooved petiole. The leaves can take on three different shapes: three-lobed leaves, unlobed elliptical leaves, and two-lobed leaves. In fall, they turn to shades of yellow, with some red.
The species prefers rich, sandy loam, but will grow in any loose and moist soil. Seedlings will tolerate shade, but saplings and older trees demand full sunlight for good growth. Growth of the species is rapid, particularly with root sprouts that can reach 1.2 m in the first year and 4.5 m in 4 years. Root sprouts usually result in dense thickets and a single tree.
