Catholic Reform

In response to the Protestant Reformation, the Catholics began losing parishioners, and new order was needed to win back support. The first order was founded in 1534 by Ignatius of Loyola, and was a society of Jesus called Jesuits, a religious order created to benefit the Pope as well as the church itself. the main goal of this order was to teach people about Catholic ideas. Since this was for males, Angela Merici created an order called Ursuline Order to teach girls about Catholic teachings and how to spread the ideas. In turn, the impact of Catholic teachings became stronger around the world.

Council of Trent

Catholic leaders began to think more change was needed to Catholic Church to bring more people back to the religion. They called together church leaders in the council of Trent in Italy to talk about matters of the church. This council met together three times in the span between 1545 and 1563 leading to numerous reforms of Catholicism including the old disdain for translating the Bible and the new idea in which bishops had to live in the areas of which the church monitored. After the meetings, it was blatantly obvious the differences of Protestantism and Catholicism.

Another Inquisition?

Soon later these peaceful and holy Catholics began to think a fight was the only way to rid of Protestants. The pope later invented "religious courts" to punish any Protestants (in their terms heretics) found in Italy. This was just as well the time when the list of unholy books was formed as we have learned in class, which included many about Protestant teachings and thoughts.
