Earth's seasons are caused by the Earth spinning on its axis and whenever that part of the world is pointing toward the sun, then summer will occur. The Earth is titled at 23.5 degree angle.
For the Northern Hemisphere Winter starts on December 21st, Spring starts on March 20th, Summer starts on June 21st, and Autumn starts on September 22nd. The position of the Earth affects the temperatures because the sun is not always directly hitting one part of the Earth.
The season force Northern and Southern Hemisphere are different due to the fact that one of them is pointing to the sun at a different time than the other. If the Northern Hemisphere is having summer, then the Southern is having winter.
