Even though Lamar had worked hard to establish a school system, very little had actually been done about it. In 1854 Governor Elisha M. Pease set aside a fund of 2 million dollars for school funding. But the schools were still lacking. The Permanent School Fund was established in 1876 to help the future of public education.
