RED SCARE
ERA OF SUSPICION
The First Red Scare, that took place in the early twentieth century, was a widespread fear of Bolshevism and Anarchism. Many people became paranoid when people became concerned over the effects political agitation in American society and, supposedly, the spread of communism and anarchism in the American labor movement.
The Second Red Scare was caused by the increase in fear that Communist would take over the world, the Soviet Union's atomic bomb, and the Ethel and Julius Rosenburg trials. Former Communist Party members said that the U.S. government agencies had been penetrated by Soviet spies during WWII.
