PALMER RAIDS
ERA OF SUSPICION
The Palmer Raids were attempts to arrest and deport leftists, especially anarchists, made by the U.S. Department of Justice. These arrests and raids took place in November of 1919 through January of 1920 under the leadership of Attorney General Alexander Mitchell Palmer, seen to the right. Though officials at the U.S. Department of labor, whom actually had responsibility for deportations, did not agree with Palmers ways, more than 500 foreign citizens were deported as well as many leftist leaders.
