The immune system is made up of tissues, cells, and organs that help your body fight off illness and disease. The immune system starts with defenses against pathogens. Pathogens are any germs or chemicals that can make you sick. Once you are exposed to a certain virus or germ, the next time it comes the immune system is able to recognize the germs.
