Growth of Towns

In the 1850s 13,000 people lived in towns in the 1860s the towns population was now 26,000

Galveston had 5,000 residents which made it the biggest town at the time in 1850 but then in the 1860s San Antonio, San Felipe and Houston all grew and passed Galveston's population

New Braufels was a highly populated German town

None of the towns could be called cities because they only had general stores, few homes, blacksmiths, offices for lawyers and doctors, trade shops, and no paved streets. They also had county sheriffs and town Marshall's for law enforcement.

Most towns in east Texas had small sawmills. Merger hotel built of stone was one of the tallest buildings but not taller than the 3 story Capitol building in Austin.
