Although president Lamar set aside land for public schools still little progress was made in education for Texas

No public system of Education existed when Texas became a state

In 1854 governor Elisho M. Signed a law to set aside $2 million for a special school fund.

Many Angelo Americans took school in log buildings or churches.

The permanent school fund was established in 1876 to ensure support for public education
