Rural life in Texas

between the 1840s and 1860s a majority of Texans lived on Farms or ranches. So the number of ranches grew from around 12,000 to almost 43,000. Because land was avaliable and cheap many Texans farmed or raised cattle on their own farm/ranch so they wouldn't have to work for others. Most of the Farmers grew crops. Other popular crops that seemed to make the most money were cotton and sugar cane.
