Religion and Spirituality

Describe:

Analyze:

Interpret:

-Two figures in foreground; woman is kneeling with hands in Jesus's hand
-mostly primary colors, also brown, purple, and black
-red is primary background color
-very textured, each color is defined
-Bold edge lines
-faces are delicately shaped
-Jesus in white with many little streaks of color, Mary in blue with red and purple

-Balance between bottom left half (with the two figures) and top right (negative space)
-subtle white lines arc towards Jesus
-woman's face hidden by hair
-unity with other colors by forming complex shapes
-colors create creases or edges/depth in shape

Debra Hurd was depicting Jesus forgiving Mary from her sins. She bends her head in supplication to him. The scene itself is simple and peaceful, made vibrant with all the color streaks. The white arcs, Mary's posture that points diagonally towards him, the horizontal line in the background, and being the largest white color, the painting directs the viewer's attention towards Jesus. Your attention then slopes along Jesus's arm to where Mary kneels.
