Balance Earth and Heaven
by Luis Ardila,
2013
Describe:
Analyze:
Interpret:
-Two slightly humanoid figures clasping hands
-geometric and invented shaped make up figures
-shapes are outlined with thin black border
-tan color negative space, bottom half has more blotches
-actual lines, some orange and purple edge lines
-top figure: white and green, a little blue, has two arms and a tail, wing shaped ears, rectangular head
-bottom figure: faded red, red, and black, two arms, badge-shaped head that is half black and half red, hair comes out in thin black spikes on top of head, wears what looks like a coat
- two figures connected by a black line and a white line twisting, out of the top figure's mouth and into the bottom figure's ear; also by clasped hands
-Unity between two figures because of geometric shapes
-top figure: contrast in face between red and black
-bottom figure: constraint in whole body between green and white shapes
-negative space unites painting
-eyes are drawn to the heads, then roam up and down the connected figures
- contrast between light, soft colors of top figure, and dark, somber colors of bottom figure
I believe that Luis Ardila was trying to portray that although Heaven and earth are opposites, Heaven and earth are connected by those on earth hearing Heaven and the good actions earth does. The top figure represents heaven, and the bottom represents earth. The lines coming out of heaven's mouth are words of truth, because the truth is black and white. Earth's arms are raised up, which connotes something good, and it's hands clasp those of Heaven. I think that this means that by doing good deeds (by hand), earth is connected to Heaven.
