Religion and spirituality are deeply rooted aspects of human life. Since the birth of mankind, people have

known and worshipped the divine beings believed to be shaping their lives. As a result, artists throughout

the ages have drawn inspiration from their religion and spirituality, conceptualizing their beliefs to create

powerful works. These beliefs from society to society, and each piece of art stands as a testament to

them. It is evident in 18th and 19th century Christian paintings, which often make the subjects appear

glorious and full of light. The Romans desired for their statues and busts to reflect the magnificence of their

empire and the power of their gods. Some more contemporary works are rather abstract, the artist

concerned less about realism and more about the particular message being conveyed. Although every

age's visualization of their beliefs varies, the one integral belief in a divine being or beings never sways

because it is part of human nature. The theme of religion and spirituality transcends time simply because

as long as humankind exists, so will human nature's belief in the divine.
