Flow Map

Bare rock

Pioneer species appearing

Grasses and moss join the pioneer species

Trees grow along with every other organism. Climax community

This flow map is showing Primary succession. A volcanic eruption occurs and all that remains in the environment is bare rock. Then, as time progresses, a pioneer species, lichen, comes into the environment. Mosses appear and grasses soon begin to grow in the thin layer of soil. As more time progresses, tree seedlings and shrubs sprout among the plant community. The environment will eventually grow back to its original state or its climax community.
