Although most Texans lived on ranches and farms, many started moving to towns. In 1850 fewer than 13,000 people lived in towns. By 1860 the number had doubled the amount.Galveston, with roughly around 5,000 residents in 1850, was the largest town in the beginning of statehood. it was also the state's most developed port and trade.
