Rural Life in Texas
Between 1846 and 1860, almost all Texans lived on farms and ranches. In this uptime, the number of farms grew from 12,000 to almost 43,000. Since land was affordable and available, many farmed and raised cattle on their own land then working for someone else.
In Texas, many focused on growing food crops. Corn was the largest food crop in Texas. Cotton was the primary " cash crop" in Texas. Because of Texas' rich soil, it was easy to grow. Cattle was a big one too, they would raise them and sold them to make profit.
