June 17, 509 BCE

Today I was elected to be one of the main leaders of Rome. They are called consuls and there are two of us. We are responsible for leading the army and running the government. Two are elected to keep from one of the consuls acting as a tyrant. I have the right to veto the other consul if I don't agree with his ideas or suggestions. One of the most important jobs that I have is to make laws. I helped create one of the major rules that limit the government. The consuls are only allowed to serve for 1 year to prevent the ruling of anarchy, like the Etruscans

I was elected by a body of 300 men called the Senate. Once you are a member of the Senate, you remain there for the rest of your life. They advise the consuls and often tell us what to do and propose laws for us to make a final decision. They also deal with foreign decisions and working with the other countries on conflicts and trade. They are in charge of the daily decisions in government and approving public decisions. I am planning on going into the Senate after my term as consul, so I can still have a part in government
