Gradation

Gradation occurs by a gradual increase or decrease of size, color, and pattern. In this picture, the frames go from large to small size up the staircase. The color and patterns of the frames also change as you go up the stairs. Not only does this create rhythm, but draws the eye up the staircase and provides a sense of order.

Transition

Transition occurs when lines change direction by flowing in a curve. In this picture of a staircase, the railing and the fabric on the stair steps move in a curved line. By doing this, the eye naturally follows the curved lines. If you're standing at the top of the stairs, your eyes will go down. If you're at the bottom of the stairs, your eyes will be led up.
