Asymmetrical Balance

Symmetrical balance occurs when the design is the same on each side of the design center. In this picture of a living room, the design center is the fireplace. On both sides of the fireplace, there is the same furniture. The mirrors, tables, chairs, and couches are all the same on each side, making it symmetrical balance.

Symmetrical Balance

Asymmetrical balance occurs when the design is balanced, but is different on each side of the design center. Again, in this picture of a living room, the design center is the fireplace. On both sides of the fireplace, there is seating, small decor, windows, and the table splits equally down the middle. This makes the design balanced, but since the furniture is still different on both sides, it is asymmetrical balance.
