In the 1850s, texans rode horseback or wagons that were pulled by horses, mules, or oxen. They used a few steamships in south Texas, and in eastern Texas they used small boats. Some towns provided stagecoaches, that were used for mail, freight, and for passengers. By 1860, there was 400 miles of railroad track in service. Any railroads from the 1850s were used for transporting products to ports and the market.
