The suns rays strike the Earth more directly in June, causing the season of summer. During winter there is less direct sunlight because of the Earth's tilt. This highest point in which the Sun is the most direct during the day is noon. The difference in location between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres means it's summer in one Hemisphere, while it's winter in the other.
