How is food broken down further?
- stomach is a digestive organ with muscular walls
- when it's empty it has folds that resemble wrinkles
- when it fills up with food the folds expand and smooth out
- stomach walls have glands that produce acids that break down food
- also contains mucus
- there are 3 layers of muscle in the stomach that squeezes food with wave like motions
- while stomach is moving it adds mucus and digestive acids
- squeezes until food becomes a soupy liquid
- after about 4-6 hours
- then released into small intestine
