What are the parts of the heart?

- needs to move materials like nutrients and gases and waste
- digestive system breaks down food that you eat into nutrients that your cells can use
- move to circulatory system where the cells take in the food
- respiratory system moves oxygen to your cells and organs
- excretory system takes bad blood, carbon, and food waste out of your body
- heart pumps enough blood in a year to fill up 4 large swimming pools!
- as 2 sides, left and right
- each side has 2 chambers or hollow sacs
- upper chamber is called atrium
- lower chamber is called the ventricle
- there are valves connecting upper and lower chambers
- valves are like automatic doors that close to prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction
- right atrium receives blood from 2 large veins, called the inferior vena cava
- brings blood from upper part of body
- this blood flows directly into a ventricle
- pumped out of heart through the pulmonary artery
