Bee Intellectual cont.

Then:
-In the mid/late 1900s white people were considered superior to colored people
-One example of this in The Secret Life of Bees is when Rosaleen was going into town to register to vote and on her way there a white man started harassing her (both verbally and physically)
-To retaliate, Rosaleen spit on his shoes, and ended up getting arrested
-Later that day, the white man and his friends went to the jail and beat Rosaleen, most likely with the intention to come back another time and kill her
-Colored persons were viewed as less than the white population and were not protected from verbal or physical violence

How Racial tension has evolved in the past 50 years

Now:
-Today racism is not as widespread although sometimes it can be seen among different races
-It does not reach physical violence
-There are laws in place to protect individuals from being harassed because of race or religion
-If this situation were to occur, Rosaleen probably wouldn't have gotten arrest in the first place, and the white men definitely would not have been able to come back and harm her
