Matriarch (headed by a queen)
-The queen has a life expectancy of three years
-During this time she lays eggs maintaining a population of approximately twenty five thousand bees

About 95% of the queens offspring become "worker bees"
-All females
-Unable to reproduce
-They take care of the queen and support the hive
-Have a lifespan of 30 days
-Worker bees may be classified as housekeepers (are responsible to support the hive) or foragers (collect nectar, pollen, and water)

The other 5% become "drones"
-All males
-Have lifespan of less than 25 days
-Serve as mates for the queen
