Soon Standard Oil gained a monopoly for the oil industry, Rockefeller buying out his rivals and competitors, he also started to develop companies just to market it's products around the globe. By the year of 1882 the Standard Oil Company had grown to control roughly 90% of the nation's refineries.

The company also went to lengths in order to make full use of the economies of scales, making their own oil barrels to hiring scientists to create a way of new uses for petroleum products.

"Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing." J.D. Rockefeller
