Plasma Membrane
The plasma membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer with protein molecules dispersed within it. The "head" of the phospholipid is polar and hydrophilic, meaning that it likes water. The "tail" of the phospholipid is non polar and hydrophobic, meaning that it does not like water. Because of these chemical properties the tails line up facing the middle and the heads face outwards creating two parallel sheets of phospholipids. This aids in selectivity of what the membrane lets in and out. The proteins that are scatter throughout the membrane serve to transport things across the membrane, intercellular joining, cell to cell recognition, and can also be used as enzymes.
