Acids and Bases
Acid- a substance that releases hydrogen ions (H+) in detectable amounts. They are proton donors
Base- a substance that takes up hydrogen ions (H+) in detectable amounts. These are proton acceptors.
PH- measures the relative concentration of hydrogen ions in various body fluids. The more hydrogen ions in a solution the more acidic the solution is. The greater the amount of hydroxyl ions the more basic the solution is. PH is measured on a 0-14 scale. 0 being very basic, 7 being neutral, and 14 being very acidic.
