Indian artisans had a reputation for the manufacturing of fine cotton textiles  which were produced for rich consumers. They came into high demand in the trading world of the postclassical era, which lead to the building of thriving local industries, which influenced the economy. Other items that emerged included sugar refining, leather tanning, stone carving, carpet weaving, and iron and steel production.
