Education

Little progress had been made towards public education since Lamar. No public system even existed when Texas became a state. Many of the schools were one-roomed log buildings. In 1854 Governor Pease set aside 2 million dollars for schools. The Permanent School Fund was created and is now worth 20 million dollars.
