The Growth of Towns

While most people lived on their farms a number moved into towns. In 1850 fewer than 13,000 people lived in towns. Over the next ten years it jumped to over 26,000. Galveston became the state's main port and trade center. However San Antonio was the largest and most populated town. Surprisingly Germans made up most of San Antonio's population. Houston is also notable for its important rail center.
