During 1850 most people still rode horseback. Steamboats were nearly impossible because of debris in the river. The Rio Grande was an exception where a regular shipping schedule was created. Many of the towns used stagecoaches as the first kind of taxi. In fact it would take you from the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Coast.
