Felipe Calderón’s efforts were in vain, though. He arrested and killed many drug leaders, but this has just splintered organizations and in effect created between sixty and eighty new drug gangs. Also, arrests of drug gang leaders have resulted in retaliation from various cartels and increased violence against the public population of Mexico.
