When former Mexican president Felipe Calderón took office in 2006, he had the objective to crackdown on drug gangs. Felipe attempted to combat corruption in the police force by increasing the role of the military in local security efforts. In some cases, Felipe even replaced entire local police forces. This resulted in numerous arrests and killings of large cartel leaders.
